Why Do Baccarat Players Bet on Banker?
Banker is the mathematically strongest of the three common baccarat bets under standard commission rules. Despite a 5% commission on winning Banker wagers, its house edge is about 1.06%, compared with about 1.24% for Player and 14.36% for an 8:1 Tie bet.
Banker isn't the person dealing cards
'Banker' and 'Player' label two hands in baccarat. You can bet either side; you do not get to choose when either hand draws. The third-card rules are automatic. Because those rules favor the Banker hand slightly, casinos charge commission on Banker wins to keep the game favorable to the house.
Standard eight-deck probabilities
| Outcome | Approximate probability |
|---|---|
| Banker wins | 45.86% |
| Player wins | 44.62% |
| Tie | 9.52% |
For an ordinary Banker or Player wager, a tie is a push: you get the wager back. The commission applies only to a winning Banker bet, not to the stake returned on a tie.
Does a higher win percentage guarantee profit?
No. Even after accounting for ties and Banker commission, the expected return remains slightly negative. Banker has the lowest average cost, not a positive expected return under these rules.
A $100 wager example
A $100 winning Banker wager earns $95 in profit after 5% commission; a losing wager loses $100, and a tied hand returns the original $100. Using approximate standard probabilities, expected profit is about 0.4586 × $95 − 0.4462 × $100, or approximately −$1.06 per $100 wagered. Rounded probabilities create a small rounding difference.
Why not just follow the scoreboard?
A scoreboard records what happened. It doesn't prove that the next hand is 'due' for Player or that a Banker streak will continue. The next hand's probability depends on game rules and shoe composition, not a visual pattern alone.
When might Player be preferable?
Variants such as no-commission baccarat can change Banker payouts and expected values. Never assume the standard 1.06% figure applies to altered rules. Compare the posted paytable first.

FAQ
Is Banker always better than Player?
Under standard baccarat with a 5% commission, it has the lower house edge. Other variants can change this.
Does Banker win more than half of all hands?
No. Banker wins about 45.86% of all hands, because ties also occur. It wins a slight majority of non-tied hands.
Is Tie worth betting because it pays 8:1?
Its standard house edge is much higher than Banker or Player. The large payout doesn't make it the better mathematical bet.
